Marvin & Margie's First Date

According to Marvin's History, written by Margie, aka Aunt Marg or Granny or Granny-great,
"Our first actual date was the New Years dance." This would have been the 1922. They were married six months later, on June 7, 1922 in the Salt Lake Temple by Apostle Richard R. Lyman."

Marvin writes about his marriage...

"When we got married, it was necessary that I get a load of passengers in order to pay my expenses to Salt Lake City. Being married any place but in the Salt Lake Temple had never been considered. I drove a car owned by my brother Fred and cousin Edward. With my girl Margie Hurst, my father, and a load of passengers we set out. We made it to Price the first day only to find the bridge washed out at Colton, so the next morning we went by way of Salina and stayed in Mayfield the second night with Uncle Jody and Aunt Nellie Lyman. We made it on into Salt Lake the third day. I paid thirteen dollars for a wedding ring. There had been no diamond for an engagement ring, that was simply out of the question."

We we married in the Salt Lake Temple which was the important thing. We went to a few picture shows, went to Saltair, and enjoyed all of the ries and concessions. In all, we were gone about a week. that was our honeymoon.

Questions to think about...

1. How long does it take to drive from Blanding to Salt Lake City today, in 2009?
2. Why did it take three days to drive from Blanding to Salt Lake City? What were the road conditions like? Do you know what type of car Marvin drove at that time?

Post your thoughts on the blog or facebook for others to think about and read.

Granny's Doll

Margie Hurst Lyman, recounting the story of her doll.
(Notice, she took her shoes off!)

At the time, Margie was living in Dublan, Mexico. "Mama's baby sister and Dad's baby sister, were about the same age, and they both worked at this big store...Bowman's Union Mercantile. I'd go there every da and Aunt Dencie, that was Mom's sister, let me look at this doll. Oh, I wanted that doll so bad. I was twelve years old and I knew that I couldn't have that doll...
"I'd got there and ask Dencie if she'd let me look at the doll. She wouldn't let me play with it, of course, but I'd just stand and worship it.

"One day, when I was coming home from school, I went by and the doll was gone. I guess I was about as disappointed as anyone could be, though I'dknown that I wasn't going to get it; I knew that. She said, "Margie, the doll's been sold today," and then she tried to get me interested in something else. "Oh, no, I don't care about anything else." I was just crushed because the doll was gone. I don't remember going there anymore before Christmas. I don't remember that I kept going back, but up until the doll was sold, I went every day. Christmas morning when I got up, that doll was in the top of our tree. That was the most beautiful sight that I'd ever seen in my life.

Margie Hurst Lyman brought the doll with her to Grayson, Utah. For many years, it resided with her daughter, Caroline Lyman Christensen. It now resides with her Granddaughter, Lynette Lyman Bayles of Mesa, Arizona.
